iDon't Care
Without getting into specifics, let's just say I work in broadcasting.
I spent the better half of this morning looking at people waiting in line overnight for the latest and greatest iPhone.
Friends, I don't get it. I'm not really a gadgets and gizmo kind of person, so I don't really get the appeal. I understand there are these wonderful apps and you can get Internet and this and that, but still...

...it's a phone, people. A PHONE. I make phone calls with my phone. I text. Occasionally, I'll snap a picture, but that's what my camera is for.
I just don't see the appeal. I am in front of my computer for 8-9 hours a day, so I don't need e-mail or the web on my phone. I'm old school and use a planner to keep my schedule. I guess I'm just not that important to have these features on my phone.
I don't really understand all the apps either. Some of them sound pretty reasonable- directions, restaurant locator, music downloads (although that is pushing it... don't we all have iPods?), but some are just down right ridiculous: Farmville? Working out-- are you really taking your phone to the gym? I saw on the news that there are apps to see what you'll look like in 20 years, or if you gained 20 lbs. Why are people paying for this stuff?

I also balk at other technologies too: I do own an iPod, but I tend to listen to the radio more (..and that's your normal FM radio, not satellite). I don't like the Nooks and the Kindles either. I will always love the smell of the pages in a book, and the weight of a good hardcover novel in my hands. I also hate hate HATE those self checkout lines in supermarkets and other stores.
Someone told me it's because women in general shun technology, but I don't think that's true. I embrace the digital camera whole heartily. DVR is my best friend, and I can't remember life before the Internet. However, I believe all of these mediums have their time and place, and I don't feel like it all needs to be on a phone.
So what is it? Is it because I'm a girl, or am I just a technological fuddy duddy?
Always & Forever,
ME
I feel the same way. I also hate how all advertising revolves around this phone! It's great that all this technology is coming out, but I don't see a need for it in my life.
I'm with you kid. Besides my camera and laptop, I live in 1998.
you, my beloved sister, are a technological fuddy duddy. The iPhone(and now Droid) is not just a phone. Right now most people carry a phone/blackberry, an MP3 player(iPod), and a digital camera. The iPhone combines the three (and it probably produces better pictures then your digital camera does).
Many of those silly goofy apps are free. For example, there is a free app to program your verizon DVR from your iPhone/iPod Touch. So when you are up in the air and realized you forgot to set the DVR for that nights episode of ______(insert fav tv show), you can just whip out your phone and program it.
Eventually, you are going to be able to use your phone to order from vending machines. Need that bottle of water from the machine but realize all you go it a $20, point your phone at the machine, place your order and you're billed on your phone.
Your loving (and favorite) brother.
Being a late adapter is not a bad thing. I never had an iPod until I was married...we bought one we shared. now we each have our own. I have a smart phone but don't use it to it's fullest capabilities (it is nice to have a GPS, Pandora and all my contacts in one device, though).
I still predominantly listen to CDs (which I buy in quantity) in my car (the iPod is for the desk at work and garage).
LB's camera DEF takes better pics than the iPhone now :)
Maybe its just a girl thing, but I know plenty of guys that shy away from the tech. Im not one of them. I LOVE techy gadgets. I dig the idea of the iPhone. As your, and my soon to be, oldest brother said, everyone has the single devices, and the iPhone combines them all. And it not only combines them, but it performs those tasks well. Vesus just jamming as much crap into the phone as possible, Apple made everything function and function with fashion and ease.
And I HATE Apple!!! So Im in no way a fanboy. haha.
My gripe. Is the costs associated with all this fanciness. You not only have to fork over a small fortune for the phone, but then you have to up your phone plan and pay for data. $30 extra bucks that I just dont have for what it is. Then, apps cost money, and some of those apps require subscriptions and even MORE money. Before you know it, you are paying almost as much per month as a car payment. Total deal killer for me.
