Sobriety: Week One

Just to remind you all, I decided to give up alcohol for Lent.

Wednesday- JEGs and I met up with our friend Connie and Joey for happy hour. I must confess, I was a little nervous to break the news to Connie that I had gone sober for the next 40 days. You have to understand something- Constance is my #1 drinking buddy. We share a love of all things fabulous, which includes a well made cosmo. We have chuging contest with Long Island Iced Teas. If I go to Connie's house, I know there will be a bevy of yummy liquors. I prepped myself as if I was telling her I was leaving the country never to return. Before I even had a chance to drop the news, Constance- in a totally unlikely move- orders a glass of red wine.

I'm starting to salivate. I'm not even 24 hours in, and I'm panting like Pavlov's Dog. Lord help me.

I broke the news, and they were supportive of it. I even made it through the meal without breaking down and order a drink! I was really proud of myself.

Thursday was easy-peasy, however Friday was a little tougher. I was on the day shift and I got home around 2:30. I had nothing to do for the rest of the day except catch a movie with JEGs around 9:00pm. The whole ride home I began thinking about curling up with my new Dan Brown book on the couch and finishing off that bottle of wine I bought on Tuesday.

..that wine I bought for Mardi Gras.
....that wine I poured down the drain on Wednesday afternoon.
..... that wine that was forbidden because I had GIVEN IT UP FOR LENT.

Crap. This afternoon is shot.

Fear not, readers- I made it through another day. But I'm giving a point to temptation because if I hadn't poured that wine out earlier in the week, I would have been pouring it straight down my gullet. No glass needed.

Saturday was pretty easy as well- we visted my family and grocery shopped. Sunday was a little more difficult as we went to lunch with some friends and everyone ordered a beer. Afterwards we convined at a friends house for more beers and Olympic hockey. I enjoyed a lemonade and a root beer float.

I did, however, have to make good on my "engagement celebration" clause. Twice, in fact. Wednesday night my friend Shay surprised me with the announcement of her engagement, so I enjoyed a glass of vino in celebration. Also, this past Sunday I went to a dinner party with some old co-workers and celebrated the engagement of my friend Meg with a bottle glass of Cabernet.

So what's the lesson I've learned so far? This was a lot harder then I intended and sobriety sucks.

27 more days to go...

Always & Forever,

Me

other peoples sobriety makes me want to drink more. it's always a rough morning after a night of watching intervention.

chin up...it's almost over.

My condolences...

I was walking to my car the other day and got a whiff of red wine. I almost cried. And I was a little perplexed too because where the hell was that smell coming from???

Hey, at least you're giving it a shot (no pun intended)! I considered giving alcohol up for lent, but decided it would be too hard so I didn't even try.

Why in the world would you give up Alcohol? That was a crazy idea! Just wait until your prenant...that is a LONG 10+ months (if you breastfeed) of not a single sip of the good stuff.
